A character must be proficient with the base weapon in order to use a flame weapon. It also takes Weapon Proficiency (Flame Weapons). Lack of either proficiency incurs a -4 attack penalty, for a total possible penalty of -8. All flame weapons are masterwork weapons.
All flame weapons can be used with Weapon Finesse.
A powered-down Flame weapon counts as an ancient gold, masterwork weapon of its base type. They have Hardness 30 and 60 hit points. All special rules applying to the base weapon also applies to the flame weapon. Weapon-specific feats (Improved Critical, Weapon Focus, Weapon Specialization) applying to the base weapon also applies to the flame weapon.
Comment - Abbe and I were talking and were thinking of reducing the Flame Weapons to normal Crit statistics, to reduce random killings. Comments? Oscar
